PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Ringtail’s Refuge presents a quiet portrait of one of south-western Australia’s most elusive forest residents. Moving carefully along a sloping branch, a Western Ringtail Possum pauses beneath the warm light of late afternoon, its body held low and balanced against the rugged timber. The surrounding woodland is richly layered with weathered bark, pale lichens, soft mosses and banksia foliage, creating a sheltered environment in which the animal appears naturally concealed.
Golden backlighting catches the fine guard hairs along the possum’s dark coat and traces a soft outline around its rounded form. Its large eyes remain fixed on the vegetation ahead, while the long prehensile tail curls into a graceful spiral beneath the branch, becoming a striking focal point within the composition. Muted greens, earthy browns and gentle amber tones give the scene a calm, intimate atmosphere. The close perspective draws the viewer into a world usually hidden among the branches, capturing a brief pause in the nightly life of a rare marsupial whose survival is closely tied to the remaining forests of Western Australia.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Western Ringtail Possum (Pseudocheirus occidentalis)
Is a small, leaf-eating marsupial found only in the south-west of Western Australia. Its remaining populations occupy a patchwork of peppermint woodland, coastal vegetation and eucalypt forest extending from the southern Swan Coastal Plain through parts of the South West and south coast. Unlike more adaptable possums, it depends heavily on suitable tree cover for feeding, shelter and movement.
Its long prehensile tail acts almost like a fifth limb, providing balance and support while the animal travels through the canopy. Western Ringtails are mainly nocturnal and feed largely on leaves, including those of peppermint and several eucalypt species. During daylight they rest in tree hollows or in leafy nests known as dreys, constructed among dense branches and foliage.
The species once occupied a much larger area, but its range has contracted greatly since European settlement. Today, survival depends on a limited number of forest strongholds, coastal refuges and urban areas where mature vegetation remains connected. Its specialised way of life makes the Western Ringtail Possum an important symbol of the distinctive forests and wildlife of south-western Australia.

The Western Ringtail Possum is classified as Critically Endangered under Australia’s national environmental legislation, Western Australia’s Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and the IUCN Red List. Found nowhere outside south-western Western Australia, the species is particularly vulnerable because its surviving populations are restricted to a relatively small and increasingly fragmented area.
Habitat destruction and fragmentation remain its greatest threats. Urban development, vegetation clearing and the loss of mature trees reduce feeding areas, nesting sites and safe canopy routes. Foxes, feral cats, domestic pets and vehicle strikes add further pressure, while drought, heat stress and unsuitable fire patterns can damage the cool, leafy habitats on which the possum depends.
Recovery work includes protecting and restoring critical habitat, controlling introduced predators, retaining canopy connections and reducing human-related deaths in urban and roadside areas. Government agencies, researchers, conservation groups and local communities also monitor populations and encourage possum-friendly gardens and land management. Long-term protection of connected woodland remains essential to securing the future of this rare south-western marsupial.
