PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Ribbon of the Reef is a striking and dynamic portrait of one of Australia's most elegant marine predators. Suspended within crystal-clear tropical waters, the Elegant Sea Snake glides effortlessly above a thriving coral reef, its beautifully banded body weaving through the water like a living ribbon of ivory and charcoal. Sunlight filters gently through the rippled surface above, illuminating the intricate pattern of its scales while casting soft, shifting mosaics of light across the coral garden below.

The Elegant Sea Snake (Hydrophis elegans)
The Elegant Sea Snake is one of Australia's most widespread marine reptiles, inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters across northern Australia, southern New Guinea, and neighbouring Indo-Pacific regions. Although completely at home beneath the waves today, its ancestors were terrestrial snakes that gradually adapted to an aquatic existence over millions of years, evolving into some of the world's most specialised marine reptiles.
This remarkable transition brought with it an array of unique adaptations. The species developed a paddle-shaped tail for efficient swimming, nostrils fitted with valves that seal underwater, and an elongated lung that extends through much of the body, aiding both buoyancy and extended dives. Like other true sea snakes, it gives birth to fully developed live young at sea, eliminating the need to return to land to reproduce.
Despite possessing highly potent venom for subduing fish, the Elegant Sea Snake is typically shy and avoids human contact. It remains an important predator within reef and coastal ecosystems, contributing to the natural balance of Australia's rich tropical seas.

The Elegant Sea Snake (Hydrophis elegans) is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its broad distribution and the absence of evidence for significant population declines across most of its range. It is also protected as a listed marine species under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, reflecting the importance of conserving Australia's diverse marine reptile fauna.
Although populations are presently considered stable, the species depends on healthy coastal and reef ecosystems throughout its life. Declining water quality, coral reef degradation, coastal development, and incidental capture in commercial trawl fisheries can all affect local populations. As climate change continues to alter sea temperatures and reef habitats, long-term monitoring is becoming increasingly important for understanding how marine reptiles respond to changing ocean conditions.
