PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Reef Phantom celebrates the graceful movement and quiet presence of one of Australia's most elusive marine reptiles. Suspended above a flourishing coral garden, Dubois' Sea Snake glides effortlessly through crystal-clear tropical water, its slender body tracing an elegant curve between the vibrant reef below and the shimmering surface above. Gentle shafts of sunlight filter through the turquoise sea, illuminating its distinctive cream and lavender-grey bands while casting soft patterns of light across the surrounding corals.
Branching corals, delicate sea fans, giant clams, and colourful reef fish create a richly layered underwater landscape, emphasizing the remarkable biodiversity of Australia's tropical reefs. Against this intricate backdrop, the sea snake appears almost weightless, moving with fluid precision as it follows the natural contours of the reef. The sweeping composition draws the eye through the scene, highlighting both the reptile's graceful form and the complexity of the habitat it calls home.
This artwork celebrates the quiet elegance of a highly specialised marine predator, capturing a fleeting moment of harmony within one of the world's most diverse and captivating underwater ecosystems.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Dubois' Sea Snake (Aipysurus duboisii)
Dubois' Sea Snake is one of the most highly specialised marine reptiles in the world, spending virtually its entire life beneath the ocean's surface. Distributed throughout the tropical waters of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and parts of the Coral Sea, it is superbly adapted for life among coral reefs and shallow coastal habitats. Its flattened, paddle-shaped tail provides powerful propulsion, while valves seal its nostrils during dives and specialised lungs allow it to remain submerged for extended periods.
Unlike terrestrial snakes, sea snakes give birth to fully developed live young in the water, eliminating the need to return to land to reproduce. Their smooth scales reduce drag as they swim, and they are also capable of absorbing a portion of their oxygen directly through the skin while submerged, an adaptation that further extends their diving ability.
This artwork honours one of Australia's most remarkable marine reptiles, celebrating a species whose evolutionary adaptations have enabled it to thrive within the intricate world of tropical coral reefs.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Dubois' Sea Snake (Aipysurus duboisii) is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its relatively broad distribution throughout northern Australian and neighbouring Indo-Pacific waters. Although populations are considered stable, the species depends heavily on healthy coral reef ecosystems, making it vulnerable to the long-term effects of environmental change.
Coral bleaching, rising sea temperatures, declining reef health, and coastal habitat degradation all have the potential to reduce suitable feeding and breeding habitat. Sea snakes may also be accidentally captured as bycatch in commercial trawl fisheries operating within tropical coastal waters. Continued improvements in fisheries management and bycatch reduction are helping to minimise these impacts across much of the species' Australian range.
As a protected marine species under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, the Dubois' Sea Snake benefits from the conservation of marine parks, reef habitats, and broader ecosystem management. Ongoing scientific monitoring continues to improve understanding of sea snake populations and their response to changing ocean conditions. Protecting healthy coral reef ecosystems will remain the single most important factor in ensuring the future of this highly specialised and remarkable marine reptile.
