PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Reef Glider captures the serene, weightless presence of a mature Green Sea Turtle moving through clear tropical waters. Filling much of the composition, the turtle glides from right to left with its broad front flippers extended like wings, its streamlined posture conveying effortless control. The close perspective reveals the intricate mosaic of scales across its head and limbs, while warm amber, bronze, olive, and gold markings spread across the smooth plates of its shell.
Above, the surface forms a shifting canopy of turquoise and silver, broken by ripples of sunlight. Small trails of bubbles rise beside the turtle’s face, adding a quiet sense of movement to the otherwise tranquil scene. Beneath it, a densely layered coral reef stretches across the seabed in branching, rounded, and softly waving forms. Small reef fish move among the corals, introducing flashes of blue, yellow, green, and black against the deeper water.
The turtle remains the unmistakable focal point, suspended between the luminous surface and the richly textured reef below. Its calm passage brings balance to the composition, creating an intimate portrait of an ancient marine traveller perfectly at ease within its underwater environment.

The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Is unusual among sea turtles because adults become predominantly herbivorous, feeding mainly on seagrasses and marine algae. Juveniles consume a broader range of animal and plant material, but their diet gradually changes as they settle into shallow coastal feeding grounds. By repeatedly cropping seagrass blades, adult turtles encourage fresh growth and help prevent meadows from becoming overgrown or smothered by decaying vegetation. These productive habitats provide shelter and feeding grounds for fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and many other marine organisms.
The species’ common name refers not to the colour of its shell, which may contain rich combinations of brown, amber, olive, and black, but to the greenish fat beneath its skin. Green Sea Turtles are found throughout tropical and subtropical oceans, using coral reefs, lagoons, seagrass beds, and sheltered coastal waters during different stages of life. Their broad front flippers provide propulsion, while the smaller rear flippers assist with steering. The turtle’s measured passage above the reef reflects the efficiency of an animal shaped for long-distance movement and a life spent almost entirely at sea.

The recovery of Green Sea Turtles depends upon protecting the coastal feeding habitats that sustain juveniles and adults for many years. Seagrass meadows, coral reefs, mangrove-fringed bays, and sheltered lagoons can be damaged by poor water quality, coastal construction, sediment runoff, boat anchoring, dredging, and severe marine heat events. When these habitats decline, turtles may be forced to travel farther for food or gather within smaller remaining areas.
Marine parks and habitat-management programs can protect important feeding grounds while also benefiting the many fish, invertebrates, seabirds, and marine mammals that depend upon the same ecosystems. Reducing nutrient pollution and sediment entering coastal waters allows more sunlight to reach seagrass leaves and corals, supporting healthier growth. Boating controls, designated moorings, and restrictions on damaging activities can provide additional protection in heavily visited regions. Although the species has improved globally, Australian populations remain nationally listed as Vulnerable, demonstrating that broad recovery does not remove the need for regional protection. Conserving the habitats through which these turtles glide is essential to maintaining the ecological relationships that have connected them with tropical coastal ecosystems for millions of years.
