The Orchard Wanderer portrays the Gloucestershire Old Spots within the traditional orchard landscapes that have become inseparable from the breed's history. Beneath the warm light of a late summer afternoon, the pig moves unhurriedly through long meadow grasses scattered with fallen apples, its distinctive ivory coat adorned with bold black spots that stand in gentle contrast to the rich greens and golden hues of the countryside. The scene evokes the quiet rhythm of traditional mixed farming, where livestock and orchards existed in natural harmony for generations.

The Gloucestershire Old Spots Pig (Sus scrofa domesticus)
Is one of Britain's oldest and most celebrated heritage pig breeds, originating in the orchards and mixed farms of Gloucestershire's Berkeley Vale. Instantly recognised by its white coat adorned with distinctive black spots, the breed became affectionately known as the "Orchard Pig" for its habit of foraging beneath fruit trees, where it fed on fallen apples, pears, and other seasonal produce. Local folklore even suggests that its characteristic spots were the result of bruises left by falling apples, a charming story that has endured alongside the breed for generations. Renowned for its gentle temperament, excellent maternal instincts, and ability to thrive in traditional outdoor farming systems, the Gloucestershire Old Spots became a favourite among smallholders throughout Britain. Although its numbers declined during the rise of intensive agriculture, dedicated preservation efforts secured its future, and today it stands as one of the great success stories of heritage livestock conservation. As the first pig breed to receive Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) status, it remains a living symbol of Britain's rich agricultural history and the enduring value of traditional farming practices.
