The Morning Gate welcomes the viewer into the gentle rhythm of a countryside morning as a small flock of Light Sussex chickens steps confidently through an open timber gate to begin the day's foraging. Three hens search methodically through the straw-covered ground while a proud rooster stands watch at the centre of the farmyard, his upright posture lending a quiet sense of guardianship to the scene. Their brilliant white plumage, accented by crisp black neck lacing and vivid crimson combs, creates a striking contrast against the warm earth tones of the surrounding homestead.

The Sussex chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is one of the oldest and most celebrated British heritage poultry breeds. Originating in the historic county of Sussex in southern England, these birds have been valued for centuries as outstanding dual-purpose farm fowl, providing both dependable egg production and excellent table qualities. The Light Sussex variety, featured in this piece, is among the most recognizable of all heritage chickens.
