PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Midnight Forager reveals the hidden world of the Australian desert after darkness has fallen. Beneath a clear, starlit sky, a Greater Bilby moves quietly across the red earth, its long snout lowered as it searches for food among fallen leaves, dry grasses and weathered branches. Soft moonlight settles across the landscape, while distant shrubs dissolve into shadow, creating a peaceful setting where the night's smallest sounds seem amplified.
The cool blue tones of the evening contrast gently with the rich ochres of the desert floor, drawing attention to the bilby's pale coat and distinctive black-and-white tail. Fine whiskers, alert ears and careful foot placement convey purposeful movement as it investigates the ground before each step. The close perspective invites the viewer to share a moment that is rarely witnessed, highlighting the quiet rhythm of nocturnal life that unfolds long after the heat of the day has passed. The composition captures both the beauty and resilience of one of Australia's most remarkable desert mammals.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis)
Most of a bilby's life is spent under the cover of darkness. As night falls, it begins searching for insects, spiders, termites, bulbs, fungi, seeds and other underground food, using its long snout and strong foreclaws to uncover meals hidden beneath the desert surface.
While feeding, bilbies dig hundreds of small holes each night. These excavations loosen compacted soil, improve water penetration and help recycle nutrients, creating favourable conditions for native plants to grow. Seeds that fall into these small pits are often more likely to germinate, making the bilby an important contributor to the health of Australia's arid ecosystems.
Because of this constant digging, scientists recognise the Greater Bilby as an ecosystem engineer. Although its work often goes unnoticed, its nightly foraging helps maintain healthy desert landscapes and supports many of the natural processes on which other native plants and animals depend.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Greater Bilby has become one of Australia's best-known conservation ambassadors, drawing attention to the challenges facing wildlife across the nation's arid interior. Recovery programs now extend well beyond protecting individual animals, focusing on restoring entire desert ecosystems where bilbies and other native species can thrive together.
Large predator-free reserves have been established across several states, allowing reintroduced bilby populations to breed in relative safety. Conservation organisations, zoos, researchers, Traditional Owners and volunteer groups continue to work together through captive breeding, genetic management, population monitoring and habitat restoration. These efforts are also improving conditions for many other native species that share the same landscapes.
Despite this progress, the Greater Bilby remains vulnerable across much of its natural range and requires continued protection from introduced predators and habitat degradation. Its recovery demonstrates how coordinated conservation can restore not only a single species, but also the health and resilience of Australia's unique desert environments.
