The New Zealand Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
Despite its name, the New Zealand Rabbit was developed in the United States during the early twentieth century, where breeders sought to establish a large, well-balanced rabbit with excellent growth, sound conformation, and a dependable temperament. Although several recognised colour varieties exist, the White New Zealand has become the breed's most familiar form and remains widely recognised in exhibition, breeding, and companion rabbit circles throughout the world.
The breed standard emphasises a broad, muscular body, strong hindquarters, and a smooth, dense coat that lies close to the body, creating the clean outline for which the New Zealand is known. In the white variety, the brilliant coat is paired with naturally pink eyes, a characteristic associated with its albino colouration rather than a separate breed. Alongside its physical qualities, the New Zealand Rabbit is valued for its calm, adaptable nature, making it equally respected by exhibitors, responsible breeders, and rabbit enthusiasts who continue to preserve the breed's distinctive characteristics through careful husbandry and selective breeding.
