BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Maremma Sheepdog is one of Europe's oldest livestock guardian breeds, developed over many centuries in the pastoral regions of central Italy, particularly across the landscapes of Abruzzo and the Maremma. Unlike herding dogs that actively direct the movement of livestock, the Maremma was bred to live among the flock, forming strong protective bonds with sheep and defending them from predators such as wolves. This role demanded independence, vigilance, intelligence, and the confidence to assess threats without constant human direction, qualities that remain defining characteristics of the breed today.
Life in the mountains and open grazing country shaped both the Maremma's temperament and appearance. Its dense white coat provided insulation against harsh weather while allowing shepherds to distinguish their dogs from predators during the night. Calm, patient, and naturally protective, the breed worked quietly alongside shepherds rather than in close obedience, earning a reputation as a dependable guardian capable of remaining with its flock for extended periods. As pastoral farming spread to other parts of the world, the Maremma's effectiveness saw it adopted across Europe, Australia, and the Americas, where it continues to protect sheep, goats, poultry, and other livestock in a wide variety of agricultural settings.
Today, the Maremma Sheepdog remains one of the world's most respected livestock guardian breeds. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
