The Bourbon Red Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo domesticus) is an American heritage breed developed in the late nineteenth century in Bourbon County, Kentucky. It was created from crosses that included Buff, Standard Bronze, and White Holland turkeys, producing a strong farm bird with distinctive colouring and practical value. Known for its deep reddish-brown plumage, white wing and tail feathers, active foraging ability, and generally manageable temperament, the Bourbon Red became a popular farm turkey in the early twentieth century. Its combination of beauty and usefulness made it especially valued on traditional mixed farms. Today, the breed is cherished by heritage poultry keepers for its historic importance and striking appearance. This artwork honours the Bourbon Red as a living symbol of American farm history, standing proudly within the landscape that shaped its purpose.
