The Highland Hearths offers an intimate portrait of a Highland cow standing quietly within the rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands, where ancient dry-stone walls and rolling glens recede beneath a veil of low cloud and drifting mist. Viewed at close range, the animal fills the composition with quiet confidence, its broad sweeping horns extending gracefully across the frame while a long, shaggy fringe partially conceals its gentle eyes. Rich tones of golden russet, warm copper, and deep amber flow through the dense coat, contrasting beautifully with the cool greens of the surrounding pasture and the weathered stonework softened by moss and lichen. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Highland (Bos taurus) is one of Britain's oldest recognised cattle breeds, with a history deeply rooted in the rugged Highlands and western islands of Scotland. Over many centuries, the breed evolved in a landscape defined by harsh winters, persistent rain, and windswept moorland, where only the most resilient livestock could thrive. Its famous double coat, consisting of a long weatherproof outer layer and a dense insulating undercoat, allowed Highland cattle to remain outdoors throughout much of the year while efficiently grazing rough vegetation that many other breeds could not utilise. These remarkable adaptations enabled generations of crofters and hill farmers to maintain productive herds in some of Scotland's most demanding environments. This artwork celebrates the Highland as a breed shaped by climate, landscape, and centuries of careful husbandry, becoming one of the enduring symbols of Scotland's rural heritage.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
