The Sebastopol Goose (Anser anser domesticus) is one of the most distinctive and ornamental domestic goose breeds in the world. Widely believed to have originated in regions surrounding the Black Sea and the Danube River in Southeastern Europe, the breed gained popularity throughout Europe during the nineteenth century and quickly became prized for its remarkable appearance. Unlike traditional geese, Sebastopols possess a unique genetic trait that causes their feathers to grow long, soft, and elegantly curled. Rather than lying flat against the body, the plumage cascades outward in flowing waves, creating the breed's unmistakable silhouette. This feather structure gives the birds an almost ethereal appearance, as though draped in delicate lace or fine fabric. Because their curled feathers lack the rigidity required for efficient flight, Sebastopol geese are effectively flightless. Their gentle nature matches their graceful appearance, and they are widely regarded as one of the calmest and most approachable goose breeds.
