PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Gilded Spout portrays a quiet moment at the ocean's surface as a Southern Right Whale emerges among gently rolling swells beneath an evening sky. Rising just above the waterline, the whale's broad head is illuminated by warm sunlight filtering through layered clouds, while its pale callosities provide striking contrast against the deep charcoal tones of its skin. A towering V-shaped exhalation catches the low light, transforming drifting sea spray into a luminous column of gold.
Beyond the whale, rugged coastal cliffs and distant sea stacks fade into soft atmospheric haze, creating a natural backdrop that echoes the muted blues, greys and amber tones reflected across the water. Small seabirds cross the horizon as shafts of sunlight break through the cloud cover, adding depth without distracting from the central subject.
The restrained composition allows the interaction between light, sea and whale to remain the focus. Calm water, gentle colour transitions and the lingering mist combine to create a scene that feels peaceful, timeless and deeply connected to the rhythm of the coastline.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Southern Right Whale (Eubalaena australis)
The annual migration of Southern Right Whales follows one of the oldest seasonal rhythms in the Southern Hemisphere. Each year these whales travel between productive feeding grounds in sub-Antarctic waters and sheltered coastal regions where mating, calving and nursing occur. Many of Australia's southern bays become important seasonal refuges during winter and spring as whales return to the same coastal areas generation after generation.
Unlike faster-moving baleen whales, Southern Right Whales often spend extended periods resting, socialising and interacting near the surface while in breeding habitats. Their large, powerful lungs produce a distinctive V-shaped blow as warm breath condenses in cooler air, making them relatively easy to identify even at considerable distance. These regular surfacing behaviours have made Southern Right Whales one of the most accessible large whales for long-term scientific observation, contributing significantly to our understanding of migration timing, reproductive behaviour and population recovery across the Southern Hemisphere.

Although commercial whaling is no longer the principal threat to Southern Right Whales, modern human activities continue to affect the species throughout its range. Coastal nursery habitats, where mothers raise young calves in sheltered waters, are particularly sensitive to increasing vessel traffic, underwater noise and disturbance from expanding coastal development. Entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with vessels also remain significant risks, especially in areas where whales spend extended periods close to shore.
Climate change presents an additional long-term challenge by altering ocean temperatures and influencing the distribution of zooplankton on which Southern Right Whales depend during the feeding season. Conservation programs now focus not only on protecting individual whales but also on maintaining healthy marine ecosystems and safeguarding migration corridors that connect feeding and breeding habitats. Continued protection of these interconnected environments will be essential to support the species across its global range, particularly for populations that remain at greatest risk.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
