The Gilded Mariner celebrates the striking beauty of a Mustard Gas Betta as it glides effortlessly through a serene freshwater aquascape. Framed by weathered driftwood, smooth river stones, and flourishing aquatic plants, the fish becomes the unmistakable centrepiece of the composition. Its rich cobalt-blue body contrasts dramatically with expansive golden-yellow fins edged in deep midnight blue, creating one of the most distinctive and admired colour combinations in modern Betta breeding. The broad flowing fins ripple gracefully with each movement, lending the fish an air of quiet elegance and confidence.

The Betta or Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens)
The Mustard Gas Betta is one of the most recognisable colour varieties developed through modern selective breeding. Breeders sought to create a dramatic contrast between the body and fins, resulting in the now-iconic combination of a deep blue or dark-bodied fish paired with brilliant yellow or golden finnage, often accented by dark edging along the fin margins. This bold colour separation has made the variety one of the most sought-after forms within the international Betta community.
Although the unusual name has remained associated with the variety since its early development, it refers solely to the distinctive colour pattern and has no connection to the fish's behaviour or biology. Today, Mustard Gas Bettas are produced in a range of shades, from vivid cobalt and royal blue bodies to turquoise forms paired with bright lemon, gold, or amber fins.
Like all Betta splendens, the Mustard Gas variety descends from wild fish native to the wetlands of Southeast Asia. While selective breeding has dramatically expanded the species' colours and fin forms, it retains the intelligence, inquisitive nature, and remarkable labyrinth organ that have made the Betta one of the world's most admired freshwater aquarium fish.
