PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Desert Listener captures the quiet anticipation of dusk as a Greater Bilby pauses at the entrance to its burrow, ready to begin another night in the Australian outback. Warm evening light washes across the red desert soil, illuminating weathered branches, scattered gum leaves and clumps of hardy grasses that have adapted to the dry landscape. Framed by its burrow, the bilby sits motionless, balanced between the safety of its underground refuge and the vast country beyond.
The low sun catches the fine silver-grey fur of its coat, while the delicate pink tones inside its remarkable ears glow softly against the fading sky. Its dark, watchful eyes and raised posture suggest complete awareness of its surroundings, creating a sense of quiet vigilance rather than alarm. Rich ochres, warm golds and muted browns reflect the colours of Australia's arid interior, while the soft background blur keeps the viewer's attention firmly on this elusive marsupial. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis)
Life in the Australian desert demands constant awareness, and few animals are better equipped for it than the Greater Bilby. Before leaving the safety of its burrow each evening, a bilby carefully listens for the sounds of approaching predators. Its exceptionally large ears provide remarkably sensitive hearing, capable of detecting even the faintest movement across the surrounding landscape.
Bilbies also construct extensive burrow systems, often maintaining several within their home range. These tunnels may extend up to three metres underground, where temperatures remain far cooler than the desert surface during the day. The burrows provide protection from extreme heat, predators and bushfires, allowing bilbies to survive in one of Australia's most demanding environments.
Long after a bilby has moved on, its abandoned burrows continue to provide shelter for reptiles, small mammals and invertebrates, making these remarkable excavations an important part of the desert ecosystem.

The Greater Bilby once occupied almost seventy percent of mainland Australia, ranging across grasslands, woodlands and deserts. Following European settlement, its distribution declined dramatically as introduced Red Foxes and feral cats spread across the continent. Habitat degradation caused by rabbits, changed fire patterns and grazing pressure further reduced the areas where bilbies could survive.
Today, wild populations remain scattered across remote parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. Although numbers are far lower than they once were, extensive recovery programs have prevented the species from disappearing altogether.
Predator-proof sanctuaries, fox and feral cat control, habitat restoration, captive breeding and carefully managed reintroductions are helping to rebuild populations across parts of the bilby's former range. Indigenous ranger groups also play an important role by managing fire and protecting country. While ongoing conservation remains essential, the Greater Bilby has become a powerful reminder that threatened species can recover through sustained collaboration and long-term commitment.

As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
