PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Coastal Sanctuary celebrates the strength and continuity of one of Australia's most important sea lion colonies. Resting upon weathered limestone platforms beneath the warm glow of late afternoon, a mature bull occupies the foreground while mothers, pups, and younger animals gather peacefully across the rocky shoreline. The composition captures a quiet moment within the colony, where each individual contributes to the rhythm of daily life along the coast.
Beyond the resting animals, turquoise waves surge against rugged cliffs, sending bursts of white spray into the air before retreating across the rock shelves below. Soft coastal haze drifts through the distant headlands, while golden sunlight warms the textured stone and brings subtle highlights to the sea lions' rich brown coats. The surrounding landscape conveys both isolation and permanence, suggesting a place shaped by countless generations of returning animals.
Rather than focusing on a single individual, the artwork celebrates the shared life of the colony itself. Together, the sea lions create a portrait of family, resilience, and belonging within one of Australia's most remarkable coastal environments.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Australian Sea Lion (Neophoca cinerea)
Australian Sea Lions live within close-knit breeding colonies that have occupied the same islands and rocky headlands for countless generations. During the breeding season, mature bulls establish territories while females nurse and protect their pups among sheltered rock platforms and sandy coves. Mothers and pups develop powerful bonds, recognising one another through distinctive vocal calls and scent even after extended foraging trips at sea. Around them, younger sea lions rest, socialise, and interact within the safety of the colony while dominant males maintain breeding territories.
Unlike most pinnipeds, Australian Sea Lions do not follow an annual breeding cycle. Instead, their unique 17–18 month reproductive rhythm creates one of the most unusual life histories of any seal species. The artwork celebrates the strength of these enduring family groups and the remarkable breeding colonies that continue to thrive along Australia's rugged southern coastline.

Because breeding colonies are concentrated at relatively few locations, careful management of human activity has become essential to the conservation of Australian Sea Lions. Recreational boating, tourism, drones, and unauthorised landings can disturb resting animals and interrupt the nursing behaviour that pups rely upon during their earliest months. Wildlife managers work closely with local communities to reduce disturbance by establishing seasonal exclusion zones, regulating visitor access, and promoting responsible wildlife viewing practices.
Commercial fisheries have also introduced measures to reduce accidental interactions between fishing operations and sea lions in important breeding regions. These combined efforts aim to create safe coastal sanctuaries where colonies can breed and raise pups with minimal disturbance. Maintaining peaceful breeding environments is critical for the long-term survival of one of Australia's most geographically restricted marine mammals.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
