PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Coastal Banker captures the fluid grace of an Olive Ridley Sea Turtle as it turns through clear, sunlit coastal water. Positioned prominently across the centre of the composition, the turtle angles gently toward the viewer, one front flipper raised and the other extended forward in a broad, sweeping movement. Its rounded carapace is patterned in muted olive, bronze, amber, and earthy brown, with shifting bands of sunlight tracing the individual scutes across its surface.
Below, patches of green seagrass emerge from pale sand among scattered coral fragments and low reef formations. Small silver fish drift through the middle distance, while larger coral structures rise softly against the blue water beyond. Tiny bubbles surround the turtle’s head and shell, adding subtle movement without disturbing the calm atmosphere.
The shallow seascape is illuminated by clear tropical light, creating a restrained palette of turquoise, aquamarine, olive green, and warm ivory. The turtle’s curved posture gives the composition a gentle sense of direction, as though it has adjusted its course within the current. Rather than depicting speed or dramatic activity, the artwork focuses on balance, adaptability, and effortless movement within a productive coastal habitat shaped by seagrass, sand, reef life, and changing light.

The Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea)
Is among the smallest marine turtles and the most numerous sea turtle species worldwide. It inhabits tropical and subtropical regions of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans, moving between offshore waters, continental shelves, sheltered bays, and productive coastal feeding grounds. Its common name refers to the subdued olive-grey colouring of its rounded, broadly heart-shaped carapace.
Olive Ridleys are adaptable omnivores whose diet may include crabs, shrimp, molluscs, jellyfish, fish, tunicates, algae, and other available marine organisms. Their feeding habits vary between regions and life stages, allowing them to make use of both seafloor prey and food encountered within the water column. In northern Australia, they are commonly associated with shallow, soft-bottomed habitats in protected coastal waters.
This ecological flexibility distinguishes the Olive Ridley from more specialised marine turtles. Rather than depending upon a single food source or habitat, it can forage across changing environments shaped by tides, sediment, vegetation, and seasonal productivity. Its compact body and powerful flippers support efficient movement through these varied coastal and oceanic landscapes, revealing a species whose widespread distribution is closely connected to its remarkable adaptability.

Accidental capture in fishing gear remains one of the most serious threats facing Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. Their extensive movements through productive tropical waters frequently bring them into contact with shrimp trawls, gillnets, longlines, purse seines, and other commercial and small-scale fisheries. Unable to breathe underwater, turtles trapped in submerged gear may drown, while survivors can suffer serious injuries from hooks, lines, or prolonged entanglement.
Turtle Excluder Devices provide one of the most effective responses in trawl fisheries. These escape openings allow captured turtles to leave the net while retaining much of the intended catch. Modified hooks, changes to fishing depth and timing, rapid-release training, and temporary closures in areas of concentrated turtle activity can further reduce mortality.
The importance of these measures is heightened by the Olive Ridley’s extensive international range. An individual protected on a nesting beach may later cross waters managed by several different nations and fisheries. Cooperation among governments, fishing communities, researchers, and conservation organisations is therefore essential. Continued improvements in fishing practices offer a practical path toward reducing avoidable deaths while allowing coastal livelihoods and turtle populations to coexist across shared marine environments.
