PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Bushman's Clock captures one of Australia's most familiar woodland birds in a moment of quiet vigilance before the bush comes fully to life. Perched upon a weathered eucalyptus branch, a Laughing Kookaburra surveys the surrounding woodland with calm confidence as the first light of morning filters through towering gum trees. Soft shafts of golden sunlight illuminate the pale trunks beyond, while a gentle veil of haze creates depth within the peaceful bushland setting. The warm palette of creams, soft browns, muted greens, and silver-grey bark evokes the unmistakable atmosphere of an Australian morning.
The bird itself commands the composition through its alert posture and striking features. Its powerful bill, expressive dark eye, and intricately layered plumage are rendered in remarkable detail, from the delicate cream feathers of the breast to the rich chestnut barring across the wings and tail. Patches of pale lichen spread across the branch beneath its feet, adding texture and a quiet sense of age to the scene. The artwork celebrates stillness rather than movement, portraying a bird whose familiar presence has become inseparable from the rhythm and soundscape of the Australian bush.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae)
The Laughing Kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family and one of Australia's most recognisable native birds. Although its relatives are closely associated with rivers and streams, the kookaburra has adapted to life in woodlands, open forests, and lightly timbered landscapes, where it hunts from elevated perches before swooping onto prey below. Its varied diet includes insects, reptiles, small mammals, frogs, and occasionally venomous snakes, making it an important predator within Australian ecosystems.
Its famous "laugh" is not laughter at all, but a coordinated territorial call performed by family groups at dawn and dusk. These powerful choruses reinforce social bonds while announcing ownership of a territory that may be occupied for many years. Young birds often remain with their parents beyond their first breeding season, helping to incubate eggs, defend nesting hollows, and raise younger siblings. This cooperative breeding system is one of the species' defining characteristics and contributes to the remarkable stability of family groups across successive generations.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.

This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
The Laughing Kookaburra remains widespread throughout much of eastern Australia and continues to adapt well to a variety of environments, including native woodlands, farmland, parks, and suburban gardens. Despite its secure conservation status, healthy populations still depend upon landscapes that retain mature trees capable of supporting natural nesting hollows. Because suitable hollows may take well over a century to develop, they represent one of the most valuable resources within Australian woodland ecosystems.
Conservation efforts increasingly focus on protecting old-growth trees, restoring native vegetation, and maintaining wildlife corridors that connect fragmented habitats. In areas where natural hollows have become scarce, carefully designed nest boxes can provide valuable alternative breeding sites while younger forests mature. Community participation in habitat restoration, responsible land management, and the preservation of remnant woodland all contribute to the long-term security of this iconic species. By protecting the forests that sustain kookaburras, we also conserve the countless plants and animals that share Australia's diverse woodland environments.
