The Billabong Wanderer reveals the hidden world of one of Australia's most distinctive freshwater turtles through a beautifully balanced split-level perspective. Above the waterline, a peaceful billabong awakens beneath the soft light of dawn as pale eucalypts emerge through drifting mist and gentle ripples spread across the still surface. Below, an Eastern Long-necked Turtle glides effortlessly through clear amber water, its elongated neck stretching towards the surface while shafts of golden sunlight illuminate the sandy riverbed, submerged branches, and aquatic plants below.
The composition seamlessly connects two worlds, contrasting the quiet atmosphere of the wetland above with the vibrant clarity of the underwater landscape. The Eastern Long-necked Turtle (Chelodina longicollis)
The Eastern Long-necked Turtle, also known as the Snake-necked Turtle, is instantly recognised by its remarkably elongated neck, which can equal the length of its shell. Rather than withdrawing its neck directly backwards like most turtles, it folds it sideways beneath the edge of the shell—a characteristic shared by Australia's side-necked turtles. This specialised anatomy allows the turtle to strike rapidly at fish, tadpoles, aquatic insects, and crustaceans while remaining largely concealed beneath the water.
The species is equally well known for its willingness to travel over land. Following periods of heavy rain, individuals often leave drying wetlands and walk considerable distances in search of new waterways, farm dams, or seasonal pools. These journeys allow populations to colonise newly formed habitats and survive within Australia's highly variable freshwater landscapes, making the Eastern Long-necked Turtle one of the country's most adaptable freshwater reptiles.

Although the Eastern Long-necked Turtle remains widespread and is currently classified as Least Concern, many local populations face increasing pressures from changes to freshwater habitats. Wetland drainage, declining water quality, urban development, and the fragmentation of waterways can isolate populations and reduce suitable breeding areas. Seasonal movements across land also expose turtles to road mortality as they travel between wetlands after rainfall.
Introduced predators, particularly foxes, have a significant impact on nesting success by preying on eggs and hatchlings before they can reach the water. Conservation efforts focus on protecting wetlands, restoring habitat connectivity, improving water quality, and managing introduced predators around nesting areas. Because the Eastern Long-necked Turtle occupies such a wide range of freshwater environments, it also serves as an important indicator of healthy wetlands, highlighting the broader ecological value of conserving Australia's rivers, billabongs, and seasonal floodplains.

We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
