The Aviary Observer shows a single Grey Cockatiel as it surveys its surroundings with quiet attentiveness. Its upright crest and alert posture suggest curiosity, while warm golden light catches the edges of its silver-grey plumage and distinctive orange cheek patches. The composition is surrounded by intertwined branches, hanging seed clusters, and softly blurred foliage. The Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus)
The Cockatiel is Australia's smallest native cockatoo and the only surviving member of the genus Nymphicus. Across the continent's vast inland plains, open woodlands, and semi-arid landscapes, wild cockatiels have flourished for thousands of years, travelling in nomadic flocks as they follow seasonal rainfall and the availability of food and water. The familiar grey plumage with its distinctive yellow face, upright crest, and bright orange cheek patches represents the species' natural wild-type colouring and remains a defining symbol of its Australian heritage.
This original colouration has long served as the foundation for responsible aviculture around the world. Maintaining healthy wild-type bloodlines helps preserve the cockatiel's natural appearance, genetic diversity, and connection to its native origins, even as many domestic colour varieties have been developed through selective breeding. Today, the Grey Cockatiel remains highly valued by breeders and enthusiasts alike, not only for its elegant simplicity but also as a living reminder of the resilient little parrots that continue to thrive across Australia's ever-changing interior, linking modern companion birds with the landscapes from which the species first emerged.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
