PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Ancient Hollow captures a quiet expression of partnership between two Red-tailed Black Cockatoos as they pause upon the weathered crown of an ancient hollow-bearing tree. Bathed in the warm glow of late afternoon, the pair lean gently towards one another, their interaction conveying trust, companionship, and the enduring bonds for which the species is renowned. The male's rich ebony plumage and brilliant crimson tail panels contrast beautifully with the female's intricate patterning of golden flecks and fine barring, while flowering banksias and softly illuminated woodland frame the intimate scene.
At the heart of the composition stands the hollow itself, sculpted by centuries of growth, weather, and time. More than a perch, it represents a vital refuge that has supported generations of wildlife within the Australian bush. Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii)
Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are among Australia's most iconic woodland parrots, occupying forests, open woodlands, and savannas across much of the continent. One of their defining characteristics is the strong, long-term pair bond formed between breeding partners, with many pairs remaining together for decades. Throughout the breeding season they rely on large natural hollows in mature eucalypts, where females incubate a single egg while males provide food and protection.
Suitable nesting hollows are exceptionally rare, often taking well over a century to develop within old-growth trees. Because these breeding sites cannot be quickly replaced, generations of cockatoos may depend upon the same hollow over many years. This artwork celebrates that remarkable relationship between bird and tree, revealing how the future of the species is inseparable from the preservation of Australia's ancient woodland landscapes.

Although the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo remains secure across much of northern Australia, several southern subspecies and regional populations face significant conservation challenges. The South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is listed as Endangered, while other populations receive protection as Critically Endangered or Vulnerable under state legislation.
The greatest threat is the loss of mature woodland habitat and the ancient hollow-bearing trees required for breeding. Because these natural nest cavities can take more than two centuries to develop, they cannot be readily replaced once removed through land clearing, forestry, or urban expansion. Habitat restoration, protection of remnant woodlands, and the installation of artificial nest hollows are now important conservation measures helping safeguard the future of this remarkable species.
