PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Alpine Patriarch portrays a mature Saanen buck standing upon a gently rising pasture as evening settles across the Swiss Alps. Positioned prominently in the foreground, he holds a composed, upright stance, his head turned slightly towards the fading light. A pair of sweeping horns rises above his refined profile, while his long frame and firmly planted legs create a balanced silhouette against the open valley. Behind him, timber fencing follows the contours of rolling green meadows dotted with traditional alpine farmhouses. The Saanen goat (Capra hircus)
The Saanen goat originated in the Saanen Valley of western Switzerland, where dairy farmers gradually developed a large, predominantly white breed suited to organised milk production. Careful selection favoured sound structure, calm behaviour, dependable fertility, and the ability to maintain consistent lactation under attentive farm management. These qualities brought increasing recognition during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Breeding bucks held considerable influence over the emerging breed. Because one sire could father many offspring, his inherited traits could rapidly improve, or weaken, an entire herd. Farmers therefore examined prospective males for strong feet and legs, balanced conformation, reproductive soundness, longevity within the family line, and the milk performance of closely related females.
Pedigree recording and later performance testing made it possible to trace these qualities more accurately across generations. This structured approach helped establish the consistency for which the Saanen became known and supported its later use in dairy herds around the world. The mature buck represents the careful genetic stewardship that transformed a regional Swiss goat into one of modern agriculture’s most influential dairy breeds.
