Tails in the Moonlight captures a tender nocturnal moment high within the eucalyptus canopy, where a mother Ringtail Possum carries her growing joey through the cool darkness of the Australian bush. Illuminated by soft moonlight filtering through mist and foliage, the pair cling effortlessly to the smooth trunk of a mature gum tree. The mother's alert gaze scans the shadows while her young passenger nestles securely against her back, learning the pathways of the night.
Framing branches glisten with droplets of moisture, while shafts of pale lunar light drift through the forest beyond. The composition balances intimacy and atmosphere, celebrating the quiet world that awakens long after the sun has set. Every detail, from the tightly curled prehensile tails to the cool blue tones of the moonlit forest, reflects the remarkable adaptations of a species that spends almost its entire life amongst the branches.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Ringtail Possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus)
Is one of Australia's most specialised arboreal marsupials, inhabiting forests, woodlands, coastal heath, and even well-vegetated suburban gardens throughout eastern and southern Australia. Unlike the larger and more solitary Common Brushtail Possum, Ringtail Possums are highly social animals that often live in small family groups. They construct carefully woven nests, known as dreys, from leaves, bark, and twigs, usually hidden amongst dense foliage where they rest safely during daylight hours.
One of the species' most remarkable adaptations is its fully prehensile tail, which functions almost as a fifth limb. The muscular tail provides exceptional balance and grip while climbing, allowing Ringtail Possums to move confidently through the canopy and negotiate even the finest branches. Their specialised browsing diet consists primarily of eucalyptus leaves, flowers, fruits, and young shoots, and like several other Australian marsupials, they re-digest soft faecal pellets to maximise the nutrients extracted from their fibrous food.
Young joeys spend their earliest months developing within the pouch before gradually transferring to their mother's back, where they continue learning essential climbing, feeding, and survival skills. This prolonged period of maternal care strengthens family bonds while preparing the young for an independent life among the treetops. This artwork celebrates that remarkable partnership, portraying both the quiet confidence of the mother and the first lessons of a new generation beneath the moonlit canopy.

The Ringtail Possum is currently classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and is not listed as threatened under Australia's national environmental legislation. The species remains widespread across much of eastern and southern Australia, occupying native forests, coastal woodlands, and many urban environments where sufficient tree cover and nesting habitat remain available. Its ability to utilise suburban gardens has helped some populations persist despite increasing human development.
Although the species is generally secure, local populations continue to face a range of pressures. Habitat fragmentation, removal of mature vegetation, vehicle collisions, predation by domestic and feral cats, and attacks by dogs can all reduce survival rates. Increasingly frequent heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and severe bushfires associated with climate change also place additional stress on populations by reducing food availability and destroying nesting sites.
Conservation efforts focus on protecting connected canopy habitat, retaining mature hollow-bearing trees and dense vegetation, restoring wildlife corridors, and encouraging wildlife-friendly urban planning. Public education surrounding responsible pet ownership and the preservation of native gardens also plays an important role in reducing local threats. As both an important browser and seed disperser, the Ringtail Possum contributes to the health of Australia's forest ecosystems and remains one of the country's most familiar and endearing nocturnal marsupials.
