PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Stripes in the Scrub captures the quiet activity of one of Australia's most distinctive native mammals as it searches the woodland floor beneath the warm light of early morning. A numbat moves carefully across iron-red soil, pausing beside a sheet of peeling eucalyptus bark where insects may be hidden below the surface. Fallen branches, scattered leaf litter and patches of soft green moss create a richly textured foreground, while towering gum trees fade gently into the background beneath shafts of golden sunlight.
The low perspective places the viewer within the numbat's world, drawing attention to its finely detailed coat, bright white body stripes and long, bushy tail edged with warm golden tones. Sunlight filtering through the trees highlights the intricate textures of fur, bark and weathered timber, while the earthy palette of reds, browns and muted greens reflects the colours of Australia's eucalypt woodlands. The Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus)
The numbat is unlike any other Australian marsupial. It is the only surviving member of the family Myrmecobiidae, representing an ancient evolutionary lineage found nowhere else on Earth. Unlike most native marsupials, which are active at night, numbats spend their days foraging when termites are most active and temperatures are suitable.
A numbat feeds almost exclusively on termites, consuming up to 20,000 each day. Its slender snout and remarkably long, sticky tongue allow it to reach deep into narrow tunnels beneath loose bark, fallen timber and shallow soil. Strong claws help expose feeding sites, although they are not designed to dig into hard termite mounds.
This specialised lifestyle has shaped every aspect of the numbat's behaviour and anatomy. From its daytime activity to its unique feeding adaptations, the species occupies a niche unlike that of any other Australian mammal, making it one of the country's most remarkable examples of evolutionary specialisation.

The numbat was once widespread across southern Australia, occupying forests, woodlands and semi-arid shrublands from Western Australia to New South Wales. During the twentieth century, however, its range contracted dramatically as native habitats were cleared and introduced Red Foxes and feral cats spread across the continent. These predators remain the greatest threat to wild populations today.
Fewer than 1,500 mature numbats are thought to survive in the wild, with naturally occurring populations now largely confined to protected areas in Western Australia. Recovery efforts have focused on predator control, captive breeding, habitat restoration and carefully planned reintroductions into fenced reserves and conservation sanctuaries across several states.
These programs have successfully established additional populations and reduced the immediate risk of extinction, but ongoing management remains essential. The numbat has become an important ambassador for Australian woodland conservation, demonstrating how long-term scientific research, community support and habitat protection can help secure the future of one of the nation's most unique native mammals.
