PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Side by Side brings the viewer close to two Green Sea Turtle hatchlings beginning their journey across a softly illuminated beach. Positioned prominently in the foreground, the pair move almost together, their dark shells dusted with fine grains of pale sand. Their disproportionately broad front flippers press into the uneven surface, leaving shallow marks behind them as they pull their small bodies towards the shoreline.

The low viewpoint places the viewer at the hatchlings’ level, allowing the delicate patterning around their eyes, the fine scales of their faces, and the ridged plates of their shells to be seen with striking clarity. Several more hatchlings appear farther along the beach, softened by the shallow depth of field as the coastline recedes into the distance. Behind them, gentle waves roll towards the shore beneath a pale blue and cream horizon.

Warm morning light enters from the upper left, outlining the turtles with soft gold and casting elongated shadows across the sand. The surrounding beach remains spacious and uncluttered, making the two small figures appear both vulnerable and purposeful. By focusing on their shared progress, the composition transforms a brief natural event into an intimate study of scale, persistence, and the quiet momentum of a journey only just beginning.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)

Hatchlings emerge from their underground nests with an instinctive ability to locate the sea. On an undisturbed beach, they generally move towards the lowest and brightest natural horizon, which is usually created by moonlight, starlight, or the open sky reflected above the ocean. The darker outline of dunes and vegetation behind them provides an additional contrast that helps direct their movement away from land.

Their journey is guided visually rather than by following adult turtles, as females leave the beach after nesting and provide no parental care. Even minor changes to the coastal landscape can therefore affect orientation. Artificial lights from roads, buildings, vehicles, and beachfront developments may appear brighter than the ocean horizon, causing hatchlings to turn inland or wander parallel to the shore. Travelling in the wrong direction consumes limited energy and increases exposure to dehydration, vehicles, obstacles, and predators.

The two hatchlings moving together in this scene reflect a shared destination rather than deliberate companionship. Each is responding independently to the same ancient environmental cues, beginning a life cycle governed by instinct from its very first moments above the sand.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.
This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with an increasing global population trend. In Australia, the Green Sea Turtle remains listed as Vulnerable under the EPBC Act. In the United States, its eleven recognised distinct population segments include three listed as Endangered and eight as Threatened. The species is also included in Appendix I of CITES.

Protecting the natural darkness of nesting beaches is one of the most direct ways communities can improve hatchling survival. Artificial lighting can draw newly emerged turtles away from the sea, while excessive illumination above the shoreline may obscure the ocean horizon entirely. Turtle-sensitive lighting programs reduce this threat by shielding fixtures, directing light downwards, using appropriate wavelengths, lowering brightness, and switching off unnecessary lights during nesting and hatching seasons.

Beachfront residents, tourism operators, local councils, and visitors all have a role in maintaining safe passage. Curtains can prevent indoor light from spilling onto the sand, while vehicles, flash photography, torches, fires, and brightly illuminated events should be carefully controlled near active nesting areas. Temporary screens may also be used where permanent lighting cannot immediately be modified.

Removing beach furniture and filling deep holes before nightfall prevents hatchlings from becoming trapped or delayed. These practical measures preserve the visual landscape upon which their orientation depends. By allowing the ocean to remain the clearest horizon, coastal communities can help ensure that the first directional decision of a turtle’s life leads towards water rather than away from it.
