PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Shadow in the Ferns invites the viewer into the cool, mist-laden rainforests of Tasmania, where one of Australia's most iconic native mammals moves quietly beneath towering tree ferns and ancient eucalypts. A Tasmanian Devil steps carefully across the damp forest floor, weaving between moss-covered logs, fallen branches and glossy leaf litter that glistens with recent rain. Layers of soft mist drift through the woodland, creating a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts with the animal's formidable reputation.
Subtle rainforest light catches the devil's dense black coat, drawing attention to the bright white blaze across its chest and the warm crimson glow within its ears. Rich greens, deep browns and cool blue-grey tones surround the animal, while delicate reflections on wet timber and moss emphasise the freshness of the forest after rain. The close perspective reveals the devil's alert expression and powerful build, offering an intimate encounter with a species that is rarely seen in the wild. The composition captures the quiet presence of an animal that has long been an essential part of Tasmania's ancient forests.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii)
The Tasmanian Devil is the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial and is found naturally only in Tasmania. Although its name and vocalisations have earned it a fearsome reputation, the devil spends much of its time quietly moving through forests, heathlands and coastal scrub in search of food.
Devils are both skilled hunters and efficient scavengers. They feed on wallabies, birds, reptiles, insects and carrion, using exceptionally powerful jaws capable of crushing bone. By rapidly consuming animal remains, they help remove potential sources of disease and recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem, making them one of Tasmania's most important natural clean-up crews.
Their loud growls, screeches and displays of open-mouthed bluffing are usually directed at other devils competing over food rather than at people. Despite their fierce appearance, these vocal encounters often prevent more serious fights from occurring.

During the mid-1990s, wild Tasmanian Devil populations began declining rapidly following the emergence of Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), a rare contagious cancer spread primarily through biting during social interactions and feeding. Unlike most cancers, the disease passes directly between animals as living cancer cells, making it one of the few known transmissible cancers in the world.
The disease has caused population declines exceeding eighty percent in some regions, dramatically altering Tasmania's ecosystems. Smaller populations are also more vulnerable to reduced genetic diversity, while vehicle collisions and habitat fragmentation continue to place additional pressure on surviving devils.
Extensive monitoring and research have greatly improved scientific understanding of DFTD, with evidence that some wild devils are developing natural resistance. This growing knowledge is providing renewed hope that the species can persist alongside the disease through continued conservation and careful management.
