PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Secrets of the Billabong reveals the hidden world beneath the surface of an Australian waterway through a striking split-level perspective. Above the waterline, mist drifts across a peaceful billabong bordered by ancient river gums and tall reeds glowing in the first light of morning. Below, crystal-clear water reveals smooth river stones, waving aquatic plants and shafts of sunlight reaching into the depths, creating a vivid underwater landscape seldom seen by human eyes.

At the centre of the composition, the platypus glides effortlessly through the water, its streamlined body and broad webbed feet carrying it between submerged rocks in search of food. A trail of delicate bubbles follows each movement, while the clear water highlights the graceful precision of one of Australia's most specialised swimmers. Warm golden light above the surface blends seamlessly with the cool blue-green tones below, capturing the remarkable connection between two worlds and offering a rare glimpse into the secret life of this extraordinary freshwater mammal.

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION

#aboutThisCollection

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)

When a platypus dives beneath the surface, it closes its eyes, ears and nostrils, relying almost entirely on one of the most remarkable sensory systems found in any mammal. Thousands of specialised receptors embedded within its soft bill detect the tiny electrical signals produced by the muscle movements of aquatic invertebrates.

This ability, known as electroreception, allows the platypus to locate prey even in muddy or completely dark water where vision is impossible. It feeds mainly on insect larvae, freshwater crustaceans, worms and other small aquatic animals, storing food in cheek pouches before returning to the surface to eat.

Combined with its streamlined body and exceptional underwater agility, this extraordinary sensory adaptation has enabled the platypus to occupy a unique ecological niche found nowhere else in the world.

CONSERVATION INFORMATION.
This design donates to animal and conservation efforts
IUCN: Near Threatened. Australia: No national EPBC threatened listing. South Australia: Endangered. Victoria: Vulnerable.

Protecting the platypus requires more than conserving individual animals—it depends on maintaining healthy river systems from their headwaters to their floodplains. Water extraction, dams and altered river flows can change aquatic habitats, reduce food supplies and affect the quality of breeding sites throughout an entire catchment.

Researchers are increasingly using environmental DNA (eDNA), long-term population surveys and community monitoring programs to better understand where platypuses occur and how populations are changing over time. These tools are helping identify waterways that require urgent protection or restoration.

As an iconic freshwater species, the platypus has become a powerful ambassador for river conservation. Efforts to improve water quality, reconnect fragmented habitats and restore natural river processes benefit not only platypuses but the countless other plants and animals that share Australia's freshwater ecosystems.
