PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Quokkas Three captures a peaceful gathering of one of Western Australia's most recognisable native mammals as the final light of day settles across the rugged coastline of Rottnest Island. Nestled among weathered limestone, coastal heath and flowering native shrubs, three quokkas share the landscape in quiet companionship. One pauses upright with an alert, inquisitive gaze while its companions continue browsing among grasses and delicate wildflowers, each absorbed in the gentle rhythm of the evening.
Golden sunlight softens the rich brown tones of their fur and casts long shadows across the pale limestone, creating a warm contrast against the muted greens of the surrounding vegetation. Beyond the foreground, the distant coastline fades into a hazy glow where sea and sky merge at the horizon. The balanced composition highlights both the close association between the animals and the distinctive coastal environment they inhabit, offering a tranquil portrait of life on an island where these small marsupials have become an enduring symbol of Western Australia's unique wildlife.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Quokka (Setonix brachyurus)
Although often photographed alone, quokkas are naturally social animals that frequently gather in loose groups while feeding, resting or sheltering during the warmer parts of the day. These gatherings are especially common where food and fresh water are readily available, allowing several individuals to share the same habitat without forming permanent family groups.
Quokkas are herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves, stems and the tender shoots of native plants. They are most active during the cooler hours of the day and spend the hottest periods resting beneath dense vegetation or among rocky shelter. Their compact size and efficient metabolism allow them to survive in environments where food and water can become limited during long, dry summers.
The relaxed social behaviour seen in this artwork reflects the calm rhythm of island life, where generations of quokkas have adapted to the unique landscapes of Western Australia's coast.

Although quokkas remain common on predator-free islands such as Rottnest Island and Bald Island, their mainland populations have declined dramatically over the past two centuries. Clearing of native vegetation, habitat fragmentation, altered fire regimes and predation by introduced Red Foxes and feral cats have reduced the species to scattered populations across south-western Western Australia.
The security of island populations has helped protect the species from many of these threats, providing an important refuge while conservation programs work to restore mainland habitats. Predator control, habitat management and long-term monitoring are helping improve conditions where remnant populations still survive.
The contrast between thriving island colonies and vulnerable mainland populations highlights the importance of continued conservation. Protecting quokkas also helps conserve the unique coastal heathlands and woodlands that support many other native species.
