BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Appaloosa (Equus caballus) story is inseparable from that of the Nez Perce people, whose traditional homeland extended across present-day Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana. During the eighteenth century, the Nez Perce developed one of North America's most sophisticated horse-breeding programmes, carefully selecting animals for speed, endurance, intelligence, soundness, and versatility. Horses that failed to meet these exacting standards were not retained for breeding, resulting in a remarkably athletic and dependable type admired by neighbouring tribes and later by European settlers.
The breed became closely associated with the Palouse River region, from which the name "Appaloosa" eventually evolved through the phrase "a Palouse horse." More than simply a means of transport, these horses became central to Nez Perce culture, supporting hunting, travel, trade, and communication across vast landscapes. Their careful stewardship created one of history's most distinctive equine breeds, combining striking beauty with exceptional practical ability. Today, the Appaloosa remains a living testament to Indigenous horsemanship and one of the most enduring legacies of Native American selective breeding.
