Outback Companions celebrates the quiet partnership of the Long-tailed Finch as a bonded pair forages across the sunlit grasslands of northern Australia. Resting among dry native grasses on the warm red earth, the birds move together with gentle purpose, pausing to search for fallen seeds as the final light of day settles across the landscape. Soft golden sunlight highlights their elegant silver-grey plumage, distinctive black throat patches, brilliant coral-red bills, and the slender tail feathers that give the species its name.
The open composition reflects the vastness of Australia's tropical savannas, where even the smallest birds depend upon companionship and reliable resources to thrive. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Long-tailed Finch (Poephila acuticauda)
The Long-tailed Finch, also known as the Shaft-tailed Finch, is native to the tropical savannas, open woodlands, and grasslands of northern Australia. Readily recognised by its elongated black tail feathers, neat black bib, pale grey plumage, and brightly coloured bill, it is among the country's most distinctive native finches. The species is strongly social, with pairs often remaining together throughout the year while joining small family groups or loose flocks outside the breeding season.
Unlike many finches of the arid interior, Long-tailed Finches depend on permanent water during the dry season and are rarely found far from reliable waterholes. Their diet consists mainly of native grass seeds collected from the ground, although insects may also be taken during the breeding season. By dispersing seeds and responding closely to seasonal changes in the northern savannas, these birds contribute to the health and renewal of one of Australia's most extensive ecosystems.

The Long-tailed Finch is currently classified as Least Concern and remains widespread throughout northern Australia, where populations are generally considered stable. Its broad distribution and adaptability to tropical savannas and open woodlands have helped the species remain secure across much of its natural range.
Despite this favourable status, Long-tailed Finches rely on healthy native grasslands and dependable water sources, particularly during the prolonged dry season. Changes to traditional fire regimes, intensive grazing, invasive grasses, and the degradation of permanent waterholes can reduce the availability of native seed-producing plants and suitable habitat. Protecting Australia's tropical savannas through sustainable land management, conservation of natural water sources, and the maintenance of diverse native grasslands will help ensure these engaging finches continue to flourish. Their enduring pair bonds and close connection to the rhythms of the northern landscape make them a distinctive symbol of Australia's tropical interior.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
