Mouth of the Reef invites the viewer into the hidden heart of a thriving coral ecosystem, where one of the ocean's largest moray eels reveals an unexpectedly peaceful moment. Sheltered within a rocky coral crevice, the Giant Moray Eel rests with quiet confidence as shafts of tropical sunlight filter through the clear water above, illuminating the rich textures of the surrounding reef.
The eel's broad head emerges from its refuge, its mottled olive and golden-brown skin blending seamlessly with the weathered coral and limestone that have long served as its sanctuary. At the centre of the composition, a tiny cleaner shrimp delicately attends to the eel's open mouth, creating a striking contrast between immense power and remarkable trust. Schools of reef fish drift through the brilliant blue water beyond, while colourful corals, sponges, and soft reef growth frame the scene with intricate detail. The interplay of warm sunlight, vibrant marine life, and the calm presence of both predator and cleaner transforms what might appear intimidating into a portrait of balance and cooperation. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Giant Moray Eel (Gymnothorax javanicus)
The Giant Moray Eel is among the largest moray species in the world, inhabiting coral reefs throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific, including Australia's northern waters. Although often seen with its mouth held open, this behaviour is not a sign of aggression. Morays continuously open and close their jaws to pump water across their gills, allowing them to breathe while remaining concealed within reef crevices.
Unlike most fish, morays possess a remarkable second set of jaws known as pharyngeal jaws. Hidden within the throat, these specialised jaws extend forward to grasp prey and pull it deeper into the mouth, allowing the eel to capture slippery fish, octopus, and crustaceans within the confined spaces of the reef.
This artwork also highlights one of the reef's most celebrated partnerships. Cleaner shrimp regularly enter the mouths and gill cavities of moray eels to remove parasites, dead tissue, and food remnants. The eel gains improved health while the shrimp receives a reliable food source, demonstrating the remarkable cooperation that underpins the health of coral reef ecosystems.

The Giant Moray Eel (Gymnothorax javanicus) is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN owing to its broad distribution and generally stable populations across the Indo-Pacific. Although not typically targeted by large-scale commercial fisheries, the species may be taken incidentally as bycatch or harvested locally for food in parts of its range.
Its long-term wellbeing is closely tied to the condition of coral reef ecosystems. Healthy reefs provide the caves, crevices, and complex structures essential for shelter, hunting, and breeding. As coral habitats decline through marine heatwaves, coral bleaching, coastal development, sedimentation, pollution, and destructive fishing practices, the availability of suitable habitat for morays also diminishes.
Marine protected areas, improved water quality, sustainable fisheries management, and large-scale reef conservation initiatives all contribute to safeguarding this species. By protecting coral reefs as complete ecosystems, conservation efforts preserve not only the Giant Moray Eel but also the countless ecological partnerships, including those with cleaner shrimp and reef fish, that enable these remarkable underwater communities to flourish.
