Kohaku's Realm celebrates the timeless elegance of one of Japan's most revered ornamental fish within a tranquil garden pond designed in the tradition of classical Japanese landscapes. Crystal-clear water reveals a magnificent Kohaku Koi gliding effortlessly above moss-covered stones and aquatic vegetation, its brilliant crimson markings standing in vivid contrast against a pristine white body. Sunlight streams through the overhanging maple canopy, casting shimmering reflections across the water's surface and illuminating the rich colours beneath. BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Koi (Cyprinus rubrofuscus)
The Kohaku is regarded as the foundation of modern ornamental koi breeding and remains one of the most prestigious varieties in the world. Developed in Japan during the nineteenth century from naturally occurring red-and-white mutations of the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus), the variety quickly became admired for its elegant simplicity. Breeders devoted generations to refining the purity of the white skin, the intensity of the red pigmentation, and the balance of the pattern across the body, establishing standards that continue to influence koi judging today.
Koi breeding flourished in Japan's Niigata Prefecture, where dedicated breeders carefully selected fish that displayed exceptional colour, symmetry, and body shape. From these early bloodlines emerged many of the celebrated varieties now recognised throughout the world, with the Kohaku continuing to be regarded as the benchmark against which many other patterned koi are compared.
Today, koi are admired not only for their remarkable beauty but also as enduring symbols of perseverance, prosperity, and harmony within Japanese culture.
