Jewel of the Village presents a graceful portrait of the Black Bengal goat, one of South Asia's most valued indigenous livestock breeds. The Black Bengal goat (Capra hircus)
The Black Bengal goat is indigenous to the Bengal region of Bangladesh and neighbouring eastern India, where it has been raised for centuries within densely populated farming communities. Unlike many modern breeds developed through intensive selection programmes, the Black Bengal evolved largely under traditional village management, becoming exceptionally well adapted to the humid climate, seasonal monsoons, and modest resources characteristic of the region.
Its compact size made it particularly suitable for households with very limited land. Families could maintain several goats using roadside vegetation, crop residues, and natural browse without competing significantly with food crops. This practical efficiency allowed the breed to become one of the most important forms of livestock ownership among rural communities, providing a readily managed source of income and household security.
The Black Bengal is also internationally recognised for the quality of its meat and the fine texture of its skin, both of which have supported regional markets for generations. Today, breeding and conservation programmes continue to protect this valuable indigenous genetic resource, recognising its enduring contribution to sustainable village agriculture throughout South Asia.
