PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Guiding Steps captures a Chaku llama and her young cria standing together within a flowering Andean pasture. The adult rises behind the youngster in a steady, watchful posture, her long neck and upright ears clearly outlined against the distant mountain range. In front of her, the cria lowers its head toward the meadow, investigating the grasses and small alpine blooms beneath its feet. Their close placement creates a gentle visual relationship while allowing the differences between the mature, heavily fleeced animal and the softly coated youngster to remain clearly visible.
Bright high-country light warms the pair in tones of cream, pale biscuit, and soft gold. The adult’s long fleece falls in thick, irregular locks, while the cria’s shorter coat appears fine and velvety by comparison. Around them, tiny flowers in white, violet, yellow, and pink are scattered amongst wiry grasses and weathered stone. Snow-covered peaks rise beyond the green slope beneath a clear blue sky, providing a crisp, expansive backdrop. The composition balances maternal attentiveness with youthful curiosity, preserving a quiet moment of learning within the open mountain landscape.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Chaku Llama (Lama glama)
A cria’s first months are shaped by close contact with its mother and the wider herd. Soon after birth, the young llama begins following adults between feeding areas, resting places, and water sources, gradually becoming familiar with the movements required for life across uneven high-altitude terrain.
Maternal guidance provides security while allowing steady independence. The mother supplies milk, responds to danger, and maintains contact through posture, scent, and soft vocalisations. As the cria begins grazing, it observes which plants other llamas select and learns how the herd reacts to weather, unfamiliar animals, and changes in the surrounding landscape.
For Chaku herds, this early development is particularly important because future breeding animals must combine useful fleece with sound health and environmental confidence. Herders monitor growth, limb structure, coat development, and general vigour as youngsters mature. The knowledge acquired through daily movement cannot be separated from inherited characteristics; both experience and genetics contribute to a capable adult. This gradual education has helped successive generations of Chaku llamas remain productive, socially stable, and well adapted to the demanding conditions of the Andes.

Our fine art and canvas prints are produced to order, allowing each piece to be carefully prepared and checked before leaving the studio. We use Australia Post for all domestic and international shipping, with delivery times varying according to destination, carrier demand and customs process where applicable. As we are based in Western Australia, delivery typically takes approximately 2–4 business days within Western Australia and 3–6 business days for interstate destinations within Australia following dispatch.
