PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Fleece of the Andes offers an intimate study of a Chaku llama framed closely against a softly blurred mountain valley. The animal turns its head slightly toward the viewer, allowing its large dark eyes, softly rounded muzzle, and upright ears to become the natural focus of the composition. Thick fleece surrounds the face in loose waves and curling locks, extending across the neck and shoulders until the animal appears almost enveloped by its own coat. The reduced background removes distraction while preserving a clear sense of the Andean setting.
Gentle evening light moves across the portrait, revealing shades of wheat, warm sand, pale caramel, and silvery cream within the fibre. Fine curls rest across the forehead, while longer strands fall in layered waves beside the cheeks and throat. The smooth texture of the muzzle contrasts with the surrounding fleece, and subtle highlights along the eyelashes and ear edges add delicacy to the close perspective. Beyond the subject, muted brown slopes and distant snow-touched peaks dissolve into soft focus, creating a quiet portrait devoted to texture, warmth, and the remarkable character of the Chaku coat.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Chaku Llama (Lama glama)
Chaku llama fibre has long supplied Andean communities with material suited to the practical demands of high-altitude life. Its fleece generally contains both a softer insulating undercoat and coarser protective fibres, producing yarns valued for warmth, strength, and durability rather than the extreme fineness associated with specialised alpaca fibre.
Traditional processing began with shearing, sorting, and cleaning the fleece before it was spun by hand. Finer portions could be reserved for garments worn close to the body, while stronger fibres were used for blankets, ropes, carrying cloths, sacks, and other working textiles. Natural colours ranging from cream and fawn to brown, grey, and black allowed varied patterns to be created without extensive dyeing.
Weaving and spinning formed an important part of household knowledge, with techniques passed between generations alongside the management of the herds themselves. The value of the Chaku therefore extended far beyond the animal’s appearance. Its fleece connected grazing, breeding, craftsmanship, and trade, transforming vegetation gathered from remote mountain pastures into textiles capable of protecting and supporting human communities throughout the Andes.
