PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
First Touch captures three Green Sea Turtle hatchlings entering the shallows at the close of their journey across the beach. The turtles are distributed across the lower half of the composition, each meeting the water at a slightly different point. One remains partly on wet sand, another advances through a thin wash of foam, while the third has moved farther into the transparent blue shallows.
Sunlight passes through the clear water, casting delicate rippling patterns across the sandy seabed and illuminating grains clinging to the hatchlings’ dark shells. Their broad front flippers extend outward as they move through the changing resistance of sand and water. Small waves curve gently around their bodies, creating rings of foam and soft reflections without overwhelming their compact forms.
The shoreline sweeps into the distance on the left, bordered by low dunes and coastal vegetation softened by morning mist. To the right, the sea expands toward a bright, nearly indistinct horizon beneath a pale sky of cream, blue, and warm gold. The expansive water contrasts with the tiny scale of the hatchlings, heightening the significance of their first contact with the ocean. Quiet and luminous, the composition holds them at the boundary between two environments, moments before the open sea takes them beyond the visible shore.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Begins an intense period of swimming almost immediately after entering the surf. Newly emerged hatchlings use rapid, repeated strokes of their front flippers to move through breaking waves and away from the shallow coastal zone, where fish, seabirds, and other predators are concentrated. This initial “swimming frenzy” is powered largely by energy remaining from the yolk absorbed before hatching.
The sustained movement may continue through the first days of life, helping the young turtles reach offshore currents and drifting habitats. Once carried beyond the immediate coast, their activity gradually becomes less continuous as feeding begins and the ocean itself assumes a greater role in their dispersal. Waves, magnetic information, and other environmental cues are believed to assist orientation during these earliest movements.
The transition from crawling to swimming is immediate and remarkable. Flippers that laboured through loose sand become efficient underwater propellers, while the shape of the shell reduces resistance as the hatchling moves forward. First contact with the sea is therefore more than an arrival at safety; it marks a complete change in movement, surroundings, and survival strategy that will define almost every stage of the turtle’s remaining life.

Once at sea, Green Sea Turtles encounter threats that may follow them through decades of migration. Accidental capture in fishing nets, trawls, hooks, and other gear can cause injury or drowning, particularly where feeding grounds and fishing activity overlap. Turtle-excluder devices, modified hooks, changes to fishing depth, seasonal closures, and rapid-release training can substantially reduce these losses when properly implemented.
Marine debris presents another persistent danger. Turtles may ingest plastic fragments or become entangled in discarded line, rope, netting, and packaging materials. Ingestion can damage the digestive tract or create a false sense of fullness, while entanglement may restrict swimming and feeding. Australia formally recognises harmful marine debris as a key threatening process affecting marine wildlife.
Because Green Sea Turtles cross national boundaries, meaningful protection requires cooperation among governments, fisheries, researchers, coastal communities, and Indigenous Sea Country managers. International trade controls, bycatch-reduction programs, rescue networks, and the responsible disposal and retrieval of fishing gear all contribute to survival at sea. Their recent global improvement demonstrates what sustained conservation can achieve, while regional differences show why that protection must continue.
