PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Blackface Mountain Herd follows a small flock of Scottish Blackface sheep negotiating a narrow path across a steep, broken mountainside. A mature ram stands in the lower foreground, his curled horns and dark face clearly defined against pale fleece and shadowed rock. Behind him, ewes and younger sheep form a close procession between lichen-covered boulders, each animal placed at a different height along the slope. Their measured arrangement creates a steady rhythm through the rugged composition.
Filtered mountain light enters from the upper left, touching the animals’ backs and revealing coarse layers of grey, cream, and weathered brown within their fleeces. Heather, moss, and sparse grasses cling to crevices around the path, while the ground falls sharply into a vast valley on the left. Far below, a silver river winds through muted green terrain before disappearing beneath drifting cloud. Dark peaks rise beyond the mist, their upper slopes partially concealed by changing weather. The flock appears small within the landscape yet wholly connected to it, moving with quiet assurance across stone, height, and open air.

The Scottish Blackface sheep (Ovis aries)
Traditional hill flocks often graze across large areas with few internal fences. Their successful management depends partly upon flock cohesion and partly upon hefting: the learned attachment of sheep to a particular area of hill. Ewes become familiar with local grazing grounds, shelter, water, and routes, then pass this knowledge to their lambs.
A well-hefted flock tends to remain within its accustomed range without requiring constant enclosure. This allows neighbouring groups to use different sections of open country while reducing the need for extensive fencing across steep terrain. Shepherds can then gather the sheep at important times for health checks, shearing, breeding, or movement to lower ground.
The Scottish Blackface is particularly suited to this system because it is active, independent, and strongly adapted to extensive grazing. Yet hefting is not an automatic instinct tied to a map; it is a living tradition maintained through repeated experience and continuity within the ewe flock. The movement of a mountain herd therefore reflects generations of knowledge held collectively by sheep and shepherd.
