PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Andean Herd gathers a diverse group of Huacaya alpacas within a broad high-altitude pasture framed by snow-covered mountains. The animals stand amongst tussock grasses, low wildflowers, and weathered stone, some facing the viewer while others graze or turn toward their companions. Their varied positions create a natural rhythm across the composition, giving the scene the relaxed, unhurried quality of daily herd life.
Clear mountain light reveals a rich range of natural fleece colours, including ivory, biscuit, caramel, soft grey, and warm brown. The tightly textured coats catch the sunlight differently across the group, separating each animal while preserving a strong sense of unity. Beyond them, a narrow stream winds through the open valley toward terraced slopes and distant peaks. The expansive landscape provides a dramatic sense of scale, yet the herd remains firmly connected to its surroundings. Rather than focusing upon a single alpaca, the artwork celebrates the collective presence of the group and the quiet social order that defines life across the Andean grasslands.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Huacaya Alpaca (Vicugna pacos)
Huacaya alpacas are naturally social animals that depend upon the security and structure of the herd. They communicate through posture, ear position, movement, scent, and soft vocalisations, remaining attentive to both their companions and the surrounding landscape.
Across the Andean highlands, alpaca herds have traditionally moved through communal grazing areas known as puna. Pastoral families guide their animals between seasonal pastures, balancing access to forage and water while protecting fragile mountain grasslands from excessive use. This system relies upon close knowledge of weather, plant growth, herd behaviour, and local terrain.
Alpacas are especially well suited to these environments. Their padded feet place less pressure on delicate soils than hard hooves, while their grazing behaviour allows many plants to regenerate after feeding. Within the herd, experienced animals help maintain cohesion and provide reassurance to younger alpacas as the group moves across open country. This cooperative social structure has supported both livestock and pastoral communities for centuries, making the Huacaya herd an enduring feature of life throughout the high Andes.
