Among the Silver Leaves captures the quiet beauty of one of Australia's most recognisable native mammals resting high within the canopy of an ancient eucalyptus. Nestled securely in the fork of a weathered trunk, the koala wraps its powerful limbs around the smooth bark while soft morning light filters through silver-green foliage overhead. Fine mist drifts between towering gum trees in the distance, adding depth and stillness to the woodland beyond.

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus)
Is one of Australia's most specialised marsupials. Despite often being called a "koala bear," it is not a bear at all, but a highly adapted tree-dwelling mammal uniquely evolved to survive almost entirely on the leaves of selected eucalyptus species. These leaves contain chemical compounds toxic to most animals and provide relatively little nutritional value, requiring koalas to conserve energy by resting for up to twenty hours each day.
Powerful climbing limbs, two opposable digits on each forepaw, and rough gripping pads allow them to move confidently through the canopy and cling securely to smooth trunks. Adult koalas often spend much of their lives within a network of preferred feeding trees, descending only when necessary to travel between habitat patches. Their close dependence on healthy eucalyptus forests makes them an important indicator of the condition of Australia's woodland ecosystems.

The Koala is listed as Vulnerable under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, while populations in Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory are listed as Endangered under state and territory legislation. Habitat clearing remains the greatest threat, particularly the loss of mature eucalyptus forests that provide
essential food and shelter. Additional pressures include prolonged drought, severe bushfires, disease such as chlamydia, vehicle strikes and domestic dog attacks.
Conservation programs focus on protecting remaining habitat, restoring degraded forests, establishing wildlife corridors and improving landscape connectivity so koalas can move safely between feeding trees. Ongoing research, rehabilitation and long-term population monitoring continue to play an essential role in securing the future of this iconic Australian marsupial.
