Eco-Friendly Materials

We believe it's essential to contribute to protecting the environment. That's why we've made significant efforts to source materials that are more eco-friendly and are reusable. Here are some of the ways we're making this happen.

What is PLA? PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic widely regarded as a more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative. It is made from renewable plant-based materials like sugarcane, cassava, and cornstarch, which can be regrown quickly, unlike finite fossil fuels used in traditional plastics. PLA is biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable. When disposed of in the right composting environment, it naturally breaks down into harmless components. Depending on its use and any additional materials mixed with it, PLA can be composted in either industrial facilities or home composting systems. PLA production requires less energy and generates fewer greenhouse gases compared to conventional plastics. In Australia, we benefit from excellent recycling programs that help break down PLA products efficiently. Even without composting, bioplastics like PLA are still a better option, as they typically take around 80 years to break down, compared to traditional plastics, which can take up to 500 years and may not fully degrade.

What is PBAT? PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate) is a copolymer, similar to PLA, and is a biodegradable and compostable plastic gaining popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic. Made from renewable resources like corn starch and sugarcane, PBAT breaks down naturally in the environment and decomposes even more quickly than PLA.

The key difference between PBAT and PLA is that PBAT is copolymer structure which makes it flexible and durable, which is ideal for applications like soft packaging, food packaging, and shopping bags. In contrast, PLA is rigid, making it better suited for applications that require stiffness and stability, such as rigid packaging or tools.

Packaging - Drill Bags

We have chosen bags for our drills made from PLA, PBAT, and cornstarch. These bags are biodegradable and 100% compostable, fully breaking down within 180 days in a composting environment.

Packaging - Boxes

Our packaging boxes are made from CCNB (Clay Coated Newsback Paper). This type of paperboard features a white clay coating on the top layer, which enhances its strength and allows for high-quality printing. It is fully recyclable and 100% eco-friendly.

Packaging - Mailers

The bags are sourced from an Australian Owned company, HeapsGood Packging and are made from 100% corn starch, PLA, and PBAT, making them fully home compostable and certified as such. To earn this certification, they must break down completely within 90 days in commercial composting conditions and within 180 days in domestic compost. After biodegradation, they leave no harmful residues behind.  HeapsGood earned this certification and we are proud to suport them and our environment.​​​

Canvas

High-quality canvas.  The canvas we use is a cotton velvet woven fabric, waterproof, even surface texture, moderate hardness, no wrinkles, and maintain the good adhesion of the canvas.  Although these canvases are reusable and sustainable hopefully having a long life, the material as made from cotton and velvet does breakdown.

3D Print Filament 

The filament we use is crafted from PLA, a material that is both biodegradable and recyclable, as mentioned earlier. We’ve chosen a high-quality filament made from corn, which not only looks great but is durable and designed to last through multiple projects while being fully reusable. We 3D print our own drill trays, pens, large straighteners, and wax containers, all of which are included in our kits.

Tool Kit Bags

These bags are crafted from linen made from the flax plant, a natural plant fiber. Linen is both sustainable and eco-friendly, as it is biodegradable and grows without the need for synthetic chemicals, making it a renewable and organic fabric.
